Yes, the best way to break in a new erhu is not to use anything on the snake skin but to use it often. You will just have to be patient with it.
Only apply very little layer of olive oil/ lanolin to snake skin if it is too dry to keep it from cracking.

What do you mean by cracking? I'm not , but is it when the individual scales peel up a bit?

Cracking meaning the scales broken up at certain portion. If that happens, that means you need a new piece of snake skin. Unless it is very good wood, in most cases, its not worth to redo a new snake skin. So, that means its the end of that erhu
