Dear Friends
I have had huge trouble in the past with purchasing ErHu bows through the post due to damage in transit. Can anyone recommend a dealer that can ship a bow sufficiently well packaged that it does not get damaged in the post?
Twice in the past I have received new bows damaged by the Post Office because they had been shipped in simple cardboard tubes that had bent. The bows in each case were bent so badly that they couldn't be used. In one case I even had to pay customs duties because the dealer hadn't filled in the customs declaration properly.
Many thanks
Ed H

Went to the post-office today to pick up my third new bow - my first two had arrived bent. The cardboard tube is plastered with post-office applied stickers apologising for their having bent it - once again!
I took out the bow in the presence of the Post-office representative and see that it is not as badly bent as before. Rather than reject it on the spot as I did previously I decide to take it home and see if it can be straightened - as I have seen done in a video.
Wow - it seems almost plastic! It bent easily back to perfect straightness.

Ed H That's good news, good for you! Could I ask that you post the link to that video? I'll do a search but sometimes things do not appear in searches.

I received an order for bows earlier this year from Eason Music. As usual, they were packed well enough and there was no damage. I was not so lucky with my order for an aluminum dizi case from a Chinese vendor. The case was poorly protected, and it arrived crushed and bent. I did what I could to bend it back, but it is still funky looking. I don't know if I will wind up using it for anything.
Yesterday I received a Vietnamese dan co (dan nhi), from the Orange County area near Los Angeles. Despite the poor packaging, just a plastic garbage bag tightly wrapped around the dan co in a soft gig back, it arrived just fine.
Mailing tubes vary in sturdiness. The ones my whistles came in from Australia were pretty tough, but the shipping charges and insurance were expensive. Sometimes it is worth spending more on good packaging when that is an option.
Best wishes,
David

dawei, here is the link - its quite informative about bows in general, with the bit about straightening a bow coming about half-way through: youtu.be/0f_rZrUEHR4Ed H

I know this is an old thread, but I just want to share how a Taobao store shipped a spare bow to me. It was wrapped in bamboo sticks (like 4-5 of them, bow in the middle) with bubble wrap on top. I was really surprised how sturdy those bamboo sticks were. I had to really use my force to break them in half for recycling. So they probably ensured that the bow arrived in perfect condition. Maybe it's the standard way of packaging bows nowadays, I donno. The store name is Dikun Musical Instrument (地坤乐器专营店): dikunyq.tmall.com/They might not have the best bows though. Mine cost only $9, and that's with an additional horsetail. Bought it just in case I somehow break the one that came with an erhu. Here's a list of the bows they offer (Google Translated): There are many more similar stores on Taobao. I chose this just because it had all the accessories I wanted in one place.
