Hi all,
I love playing the xiao, but I am getting pretty frustrated with issues with transposing western/classical tunes to play on the xiao. Would love to have a chromatic xiao, or at least something similar but I can find no such counterpart.
For dizi, there is the western concert flute, which I will not pick up due to issues with playing in transverse position.
There isn't a chromatic end blown classical orchestral instrument.

The xiao is designed for playing traditional Chinese music. You can probably play some Western tunes as well. An eight-hole xiao will have yet more possibilities for getting notes out of the diatonic scale. For tunes that require a chromatic instrument, a xiao is not a good choice. I use my silver Western "Boehm" flute for playing chromatically. If the transverse position does not work for you, I suggest considering an end-blown headjoint for a Boehm flute along these lines: ShakuluteI have not tried the Shakulute head, but it looks promising. The bamboo heads are rather expensive, but there is a less costly resin model. I think there are similar headjoints by other makers. You might find them on Ebay and other locations. Best wishes, David

Are you playing a 6 hole or 8 hole xiao? The 8 holes models are easier to play in a variety of keys and with only a few half-holes are fully chromatic. If you are good with half-holes, even a 6 hole xiao is chromatic:
