Besides the drone pipe both instruments seem to sound alike and have the same or similiar fingering systems, so is there a big difference between the tonality of a gourd and directly blowing on the reed, which do you prefer?

The hulusi and bawu have identical fingering but the music written for them differs slightly. The hulusi tunes that I'm familar with start off slowly, have a very quick middle and end slowly. Bawu tunes as I understand it are slow throughout.
I find the highest notes easier to play on the hulusi (when all fingers are released) because it's held in place with the lips. Why not buy both and see which you prefer. In my experience cost does not always equate to sound quality.
