HELP!
I am an intermediate violinist who just started er-hu a few months ago. In violin, posture is key, like in many instruments. But a bad habit I have developed from the violin is being too tense. I grip the er-hu bow to hard and my right arm is very stiff, restricting my sound quality on music. Every time I start tensing up, my er-hu teacher yells Fàngsōng! Fàngsōng! And just a bit later, I start stiffening again. Is there anything I can do to get rid of this?

Your violin teacher should have helped you with relaxing. Perhaps you are on exercises you aren't ready for. Try going back to basics. Eason music has a good video on erhu bowing.
When I practised bowing I combined it with breathing/meditation techniques: breathe in bow out: one, two, three, four, five; breathe out bow in: one two, three four five.

I imagine that your teacher yelling at you is very effective at helping you to relax. Tension when playing any instrument is a common problem. Pay attention to tension everywhere in your body and remember to breath. In case your teacher didn't clarify for you, the bow hair on an erhu bow should be a lot looser than on a violin bow. If it is too tight, that can affect your tension and sound. Best wishes, David

Be careful - tension during playing can cause serious problems - don't underestimate it. I have suffered badly myself. In fact I think I am about to give up playing.

Thanks for your encouragement SuLi Sues YU.
I had a lot of problems with my shoulder when I first started playing, but these soon disappeared. The latest problems however are in my elbows - both of them - and are causing me problems even when not playing.
By the way - I forgive you for confusing me with Ed!

Elbow trouble
Hi! I'm back. I stopped playing completely for more than a year because of pain in my elbows but have recently started again - and guess what, I can play better that I did before!
But the pain has got worse too.
