Famous historians of Modern Chinese history include Immanuel Hsu, Jonathan Spence, and John K. Fairbank. Who's your favorite historian and why?

I'm very fond of ancient history and not so fond of modern history, as I find it too politicised. Also as a general reader I find it too much of a chore to read in depth on any historical matter.
As a brief overview I highly recommend Bamber Gascoigne's "A Brief History of the Dynasties of China". I've read a book about the Opium War but I probably would have got all the details from Wikipedia.
I have but haven't read yet (because it's too painful) Iris Chang's "The Rape of Nanking".
