The Lore of the Chinese Lute is getting reprinted, and is available for pre-order at Amazon.com! I have already submitted my order. Boy, am I glad that I did not spring for that 1969 edition priced at $200.
Best wishes,
David

suppose its good for those that dont have a copy of the old one. But its very annoying that it does not use Ping Ying.
And Im more interested in a hypathetical new, modern book, including much of the things that were not mentioned in the above book - that will be written be some multi-lungual saviours!!!!!!
Amen

I received this morning an email from Chris Frape at Orchid Press that Lore of the Chinese Lute by Robert Van Gulik has finally been reprinted, and is available from their website: www.orchidbooks.com/indiv_titles.html#loreluteI checked Amazon, but it is not there yet. I will will probably order it from Orchid since I want to do my part to encourage publication of this sort of book. Best wishes, David

Today I received a notice from Barnes & Noble that my copy of Lore of the Chinese Lute has shipped. At last! The current price is $27.78. That is much less than ordering direct from Orchid and paying international shipping.
Best wishes,
David

I should have known not to count my chickens before they hatched. I received another email from Barnes & Noble informing me that shipment of the Gulik Lore book has been canceled. They no longer list the book as available to order. <sigh>
I wonder if it is still actually available at Orchid Press. The story continues...
Best wishes,
David

Seriously, I ordered from B&N and then decided to cancel it because of funding problems on my side. It seems LOTL is a bloody walking disaster in terms of reprints. They keep cancelling and postponing. You might as well have saved up for the original copy after all these years of waiting...

Yes, the persistent postponements are discouraging. I am not completely without LOTCL though. I have it in PDF form from JSTOR. I just prefer reading a book from my La-Z-Boy to the computer screen.
Currently I am reading "Lives in Chinese Music" by Helen Rees. It's a fascinating book, with each chapter about a particular musician, and their experiences learning and performing music. I just started the chapter on Tsar Teh-Yun, a remarkable woman qin master who was 100 years old at the time of the writing. So far, I see plenty to recommend about the book.
Best wishes,
David

More info:
The book is "hardbound with dust jacket (we found a great painted portrait of van Gulik's qin master, Ye Shiming, now in a Dutch museum, for the cover illustration)."

I just ordered it from an Amazon.com seller who is selling the Orchid Press edition (http://www.amazon.com/gp/offer-listing/9745241121/ref=dp_olp_new?ie=UTF8&qid=1299368615&sr=8-1&condition=new). With shipping, it came to $42 and should arrive by the end of March. I am looking forward to it!

Received the book today! It is a nice hard cover edition with a newly designed dust cover. The paper is high quality, slightly glossy. The reproduction of the original figures and text is good. The pages seem slightly longer in dimension than the original. Perhaps Amazon will soon start selling it directly, but given the delays, I decided the $12 savings was not worth it.

Cool! For what it's worth Barnes & Noble lists a new date of 7/16. I have plenty to read and will probably wait. Congratulations on finally getting the Lore book. Enjoy.
Best wishes,
David
