Traditional music from the Chinese countryside is difficult to find on CDs or even on YouTube - the sort of thing played on funeral processions or at wedding ceremonies. However I have recently read some very interesting material about this kind of music, and can recommend the following two books - both of which come with a CD. This is research material and heavy reading but gives a wonderful idea of old Chinese music if one is happy to dip in and read just the best bits - and of course, play the CD.
Antoinet Schimmelpenninck, 1997, "Chinese folk songs and folk singers - Shan'ge traditions in Southern Jiangsu", CHIME Foundation, Leiden. ISBN 90-803615-1-8. With CD.
Stephen Jones, 2004, "Plucking the Winds: Lives of village musicians in old and new China", Chime Foundation, Leiden, ISBN 90-803615-2-6. With CD.
