Frankly I got a "B" in that course in high school. There were quite a few classmates who did much better than I did. Fortunately the teacher was pretty silent about one's quality of work so long as one tried his/her best. For me, branches and trunks of pine trees and bamboo stalks were easy to paint. Pine leaves/needles and iris flowers and leaves were not. There was also a general rule against making the painting symmetrical (I can already see parts of that bamboo painting that kinda violates that principle). Also attempted to paint dragons and tigers, but always messed up depicting the tiger's tongue for some reason. The teacher said that one should always try to paint bamboo when one is in a bad mood because appartently for some reason that leads to the best bamboo painings. We were required to take two semesters of Fine Arts in high school. Courses included photography, visual arts, drawing, painting, ceramics, choir, orchestra, one-on-one musical instrument lessons, and dance. Drama was considered an English elective. I should have ventured taking a course on a Chinese musical instrument then rather than recently. The other fine arts course I took was drawing. The teacher of that course was pretty blunt about once's quality of work, but I ended up getting a A-. What I considered to be my best drawing was part of an azalea containing leaves and flowers. (Azaleas are planted everywhere in Taipei because that's the city flower). Unfortunately, that drawing was destroyed by the legendary Formosan termites!
