Hi! Is anyone here from SOAS? I have just gotten a place to do my undergraduate studies in Music at SOAS. I will start school next year. My area of interest is in Chinese Music and I play the erhu for many years already! Nice to meet all of you!!

Hi george91, Welcome.
My dizi/erhu teacher's other student, Melanie is currently at SOAS reading Music and Chinese. She's learning the yangqin from him. Where did you learn to play the erhu?
Sanmenxia seems to have conections with SOAS as well.
Best wishes
Ed

I also have a collague who read music at university. He majored on drums but also had to learn a 'new' instrument. My choice for you would be either dizi or liuqin/zhongruan.

Oh that's nice to know someone playing the yangqin at SOAS. My teacher is from China and I have been learning from him for like 7 years now. And for the 'new' instrument, I'd probably learn something non chinese. Perhaps the Armenian duduk?

I don't know if you can learn a non chinese instrument at SOAS. Isn't the guanzi similar to the Armenian duduk? Learning the dizi woud be more practical, and with that you could teach yourself the hulusi and bawu.
