I'll be receiving a guqin in May and I'm uncertain as to how to being learning with it. One of my fears is instilling bad practice and bad habits into my technique that I will have to unlearn later. Is there any direction that people on this board could point me in to learn to play? I live in south Florida, near west palm beach (county).

If you can't find a teacher there's always Standards of the Guqin.

I've seen that, as well as peiyouqin.com/ and other websites. I've also been making calls to different people in Florida. It's interesting to hear how surprised people are to hear that someone is pursuing the guqin.

We don't get a lot of discourse on the guqin on this forum, even though the chief moderator, Charlie, plays the guqin. You will find more activity on the guqin group on Facebook. Maybe someone there will know of a guqin resource in your corner.
There appears to be a resurgence of interest in the guqin in China, but it is still a bit of a challenge to find teachers in the USA. As it happens, Jim Binkley, a fine player and teacher. lives in Portland, Oregon. I have been tempted to study with him, but I have my hands full of other instruments and activities.
There are some interesting books on the guqin and guqin players. I recently read a book by Bell Yung titled "The Last of China's Literati" about venerable qin teacher Tsar Teh-Yun. Books about qin players will not tell you much about actually playing the qin, but you can get a glimpse of the culture.
Best wishes,
David

I have just started learning to play. It is still surprising to me that there is so little available (in English). I think it does help me to have a teacher, especially as a complete beginner.
Did you notice that Pei-You Chang (at that web site you mentioned) gives lessons by Skype? It might be an option for you if you don't find a teacher nearby.

I got in touch with her and I've actually been talking to her over facebook. After I get my guqin I intend to be in touch with her for help and probably lessons. If you find the website on facebook and you want any help it's easy enough to get in touch with her.
It feels a lot like learning a lost language.
