Congratulations on your figuring out the sheng. When the notes go silent on my hulusi I get a pin and flick out the tongue part of the reed.

A faulty reed has the reed tongue not level, so if it sticks up you press it down to make it lie flat. That can done without removing the reed from the pipe.
But if the tongue is sunk down, you have to remove the reed and press the tongue up from the underside.

This thread helped me so much! I acquired a sheng two years ago and noticed the same problem, sanmenxia. Thank you for the detailed step by step descriptions of the problem and the solution. Thank you everyone for contributing to this thread and helping me understand and fix my instrument! Now I must go play it.
