Go Sim Lim Square only if you: - Already know what you want to get - Know the recommended retail price of the product - Look and speak like a local The same goes for those electronic shops in Orchard Road, unless its those big electronic stores like Harvey Norman or Best Electronics, but I don't they sell professional recording equipment. In that case, could I ask you to kindly accompany me to make the purchase...? Just kidding ! Sure. My shop is just 5mins walk from Sim Lim Square. Just drop me a note b4 hand.

Wow! Personal consumer assistance. Can't go wrong with that.
Please tell us what you decide from your research and what you think of the purchase. I was fiddling with the Zoom unit I have and discovered that I am able to record a line in (like from a mixer or stereo or iPod) and a microphone at the same time, one in each stereo channel, and set the input levels differently so they match. This would be great for instrument miking - you could put a contact pickup on the instrument (picks up strong fundamentals but little string sound) and used a mic as well (picks up room sound and the "air" from the instrument) and record them together. You'd have a stereo signal, but could remix it into a mono signal with Audacity or any other studio type program.

Thanks for the advice Calden. Audacity software is really a "must have" : you can even change the key of the tune !

I have an Olympus Digital voice recorder. I used to use for my gu qin lessons, and found it fine for that. I was not looking for professional quality. It was very cheap actually.
Me and my family often use it to record funny family events. Hahaha we once recorded an drunken taxi ride in shanghai hahah i wont bore you with details now.......
