Hey guys,
I've been following these boards for a little bit since I received my Dizi and have found the information invaluable.
I figured I'd start how I found the Dizi...
Lately I've been on a fitness kick and part of my routine involves doing yoga and tai chi... and in the background I kept hearing this instrument I wasn't familiar with. I have determined it was the Dizi and went in search of one.
I listened to some on YouTube and found the best sounding one was in the key of C. I've never played a flute or Dizi before but come from a musical family and have played guitar most my life. It took me a few days to get some sounds out of it.. but I managed. I haven't been following any instructions - just trying to get all the notes to play ie: playing melodies like Mary had a Little Lamb, etc (after two weeks I still have issues getting from the low to higher notes). Plus, if these things can play two octaves I'll be damned if I can figure that out (yet).
When I was researching I didn't want to spend a lot... but, I didn't want to go cheaply. I think I found it with this flute - it appears the ends are plastic capped, brass connectors and they claimed it was made from 4+ year purple bamboo. No idea if it is.. Does it sound good? Any note that doesn't squeak sounds good in my books.
I broke down and ordered the rest of the set. I've been playing mostly on the Key E flute. I find the notes a lot easier to play and probably should have started with this one... but, well, what fun is that? I have noticed you need to keep your head up when you're playing so you don't end up drooling in the flute haha..... and getting rid of that airy sound when you blow is going to take a little work....
So, hello, I'm here. I'm sure I'll be asking lots of questions....
This is my set up:
