(Sorry I could not find the right thread)
I just bought a $30 hulusi... but covering and uncovering different holes only produces one note. Is it broken, or am I missing something? Are there other holes that are supposed to be covered/uncovered?
I can't return it, so it would be extremely disappointing if I can't play it...

Hi beau and welcome,
Have you covered the thumb hole?

I just discovered that the reason is not blowing hard enough! It's very difficult to maintain the notes without it switching back into the default note though. Is it the quality of the hulusi or simply practicing maintaining the air pressure?

I'm guessing you have a C key hulusi? You don't need to blow particularly hard on a C key, but the breath must come deep down from your stomach. In fact I'd advise against blowing too hard on the higher notes as it could cause the reed inside to bend out of shape. Without seeing it your $30 should be ok. I have many hulusis, from the cheapest to the very dear and price is not necessarily an indication of sound quality.

It remembers me my first day with my new bawu. I also blew as in a flute, soft and vibrant, and got only one, cow moo sounding tone. At the beginning it's hard to blow this kind of instrument, but after you will see that air goes slowly through and at the end I think that you need less air to blow a melody with bawu/hulusi than with dizi.

Hi guys, I have just received my first hulusi and I am having the same problem. The hulusi only seems to be playing one note, regardless of my finger placement and how hard I blow. It is in the key of C. Is it a technique problem, or may it be faulty?

Welcome to the forum, Jay. Sorry for the trouble with your hulusi. Without a recording of your hulusi testing, it is really hard to help you much. By far the usual problem people have is not blowing hard enough. It is certainly possible that you have a defective hulusi, but much more likely that you are not blowing enough.
Best wishes,
David
