There have been a couple of threads on erhu grade exam pieces. I'd be grateful if someone could post something similar for the dizi. I can play Gusu Xing well but my favourite piece which my teacher keeps promising to start me, I fear is too advanced.
Can anyone recommend a few pieces in between.

Hello Ed! As Gusuxing is 5th grade and Spring on Xiang river 8th grade, I guess it would be nice to work on 6th and 7th grade pieces. For qudi-dadi, they are for example: 六级 - 6th grade 音阶与八度练习 喜报 中花六板 梅花三弄 七级 - 7th grade 妆台秋思 牧民新歌 乡歌 寒江残雪 You already know some of them. For the other, you'll get score and video if you put the title in Google. Best wishes, Flo.

For the 5th grade, you have:
水乡船歌 - C dizi 小放牛 - D dizi 塔塔尔族舞曲 - E dizi
Other I have in my exam book are for bangdi.

What exam book do you use? Do you have a link to where I can get one? Thanks

Actually, most of time, you learn things from books more quickly than on internet.

As you get on Internet soft copies of Chinese books, I don't see any difference in terms of time or knowledge, but my purse sees a big difference in terms of money! Anyway, I think that the goal of such forums is also to help people to get knowledge for free.

A good method book often includes exercises interspersed between the tunes which help to focus attention on the technical problems in the tunes. It all is available on the Internet though for those resourceful enough. If you are looking for a specific tune, it is often enough to know the Chinese name to include with the characters for jianpu.
I found fairly early in my erhu studies that it was a waste of money to buy scores. My teacher gave me all the tunes I needed from copies of his own scores, or written out by hand. For guzheng, I have been using both scores from the Internet and a set of large format books.
Use whatever works for you.
Best wishes,
David

My teacher says some of the other grade 5 pieces are much more difficult than Gusu Xing, how can this be?? He has also written out scores for me but the one I'm currently on I should manage to perfect it by the next time I see him. Doesn't it make that too easy then? I'd like scores which will challenge me but not so difficult as to be frustrating.

As I needed more than one year to play Gusuxing decently, I don't have the feeling that 小放牛 and 塔塔尔族舞曲 (that I played before Gusuxing) are more difficult. But your teacher knows you. You have to talk with him about what you feel and want.

It's difficult to speak to my teacher: he has a very limited English and I have no Mandarin. Still, three and a half years tuition of anything isn't much.

Although the version I put last year on Youtube is not "updated" anymore, I still didn't find time to make a better recording. The problem is that I practised the piece with D dizi for a performance, but I would like to record it in C. I'll do it in September. Yes, difficult to say what you feel if you have no language to express your feelings.
