Sure - when I get hold of the book I'll let you know. I've been practising and reading during those months, and I try and ask guqin experts questions if/when they are around. And you guys have helped me a lot as well. When you are next back in town, maybe we can catch up and I'll let you know my situation in more detail.

Also, to expand, I completely disagree with the idea that you cannot learn guqin rhythm on your own. I think that, the more I find out about the situation, the more I am inclined to think that learning the guqin - including rhythm in guqin music - happens to be an amalgam of being informed (by the literature), being taught (even if this means occasional lessons here and there in workshops, summer schools, masterclasses, etc.), and becoming familiar with the historical/cultural/musical etc. context and background of the music. I am not sure I am convinced that I myself would be able to learn the guqin completely on my own and still do justice to the art and music of guqin without ever receiving any training/instruction from anyone. I guess I could do a large part of the learning process myself, but in the end I think I would feel better if I actually have someone to check if I am on the right track, or if there's anything completely out of wack. I am not suggesting that continuous regular lessons is necessarily a must, either. I am just saying that I think it might be best to have someone check how one's progressing every now and then, even if this is only possible during the odd workshop/masterclass/lesson etc. But I think what Charlie is saying is simply with reference to learning guqin rhythms, rather than learning to play the guqin in general.

Yes, I'm talking about rhythms here and not general fingering etc; you need those to get your fundamentals corrected first.

Whilst you're at Joyo.com, other books on guqin which are good include Wu Zhao's Jueshi Qingyin, Xu Xiaoying and Xu Junyue's Zhepai Guqin Yishu, and other interesting books you don't have.
